zapp_rowsdower Incredibly interesting concept for production. My overall feel of this is that there are a lot of plodding, ugly, boring parts that can be difficult to wade through. However, hidden among those long stretches of seeming inanity lie gems of incredible beauty. Maybe analogous to our own human experience? I have no idea how I could even pin down what this experience really feels like, it is difficult to put into words. Welcome, explorer. Favorite track: Between Stars.

about

I wrote this album late last year (2021) in my room with a keyboard and laptop to play and record each track. Some of them took a few hours while others took months to perfect. Each track was written using one of two techniques, improvisation and looping. The process for the improvised pieces is self-explanatory, I sat at the keyboard, maybe worked out one or two vague ideas, then hit record and wrote a song on the spot. These tracks didn’t have a pre-planned structure, but as they were played I was able to work out how the piece would progress and evolve. The looped tracks are much more structured and are the ones that took weeks or months to write. For the most part, I worked out a bunch of simple melodies and chord progressions and layered each one in with its own MIDI sound and automation. The repetition of those tracks allowed me to explore different effects to adjust as the piece went on, adding a lot more depth.

Each track has its own meaning but they all relate to me and how I've dealt with mental illness. Some reference specific events in my life while others are about a more general topic or feeling. The album follows the story of the past two years, starting with the isolation and depression of the pandemic and going through the process of getting better.

I’m very proud of the work I’ve done creating this album and I hope that anyone who listens to it is able to connect with and find their own meaning in it.
